Southern Tuscany – Relaxing Into a Tuscan Agriturismo

Olive groves stretch down a sunny hillside. Vineyards stand above them, grapes glistening in the golden afternoon light. In the distance, you can see a small village, perched on top of a hill in rural Southern Tuscany. Beside your villa, there is a swimming pool, hidden away from the rest of the world. You’re staying at an agriturismo, a working farm that produces cheese, olive oil, and other Tuscan delicacies. There’s space here, space for kids to run around and space for your family to be together. Check-in, meet the family, discuss what you are going to do over the next few days, and spend the evening dining on a private terrace, discovering how fresh Italian cooking can be.

Detailed Description

This handcrafted tour is all about sharing new experiences as a family. Wake up on a Tuscan farm and learn the art of making pasta. Take a funicular into the Swiss mountains where it feels like you’re on top of the world. Walk the spooky catacombs of Paris then whizz your way up the Eiffel Tower. In Rome, you can be a gladiator for a day while in Zurich you’ll learn all about making cheese. Spread across five very different destinations, this slow-paced tour takes your family to Italy, France, and Switzerland.

Start in Southern Tuscany and an agriturismo, a farm turned resort that’s immersed in the region’s beauty. Children can learn and experience all aspects of the farm, as well as other Italian experiences like making pasta. You get to sit back and enjoy rural Tuscan tranquility and hospitality. With a rental vehicle, you have the independence to visit towns and villages all across the region. You have the freedom to spend a day in Siena, make a trip to Florence, or explore the old-world cobbles of Pienza. Then return to the authenticity of the farm and a customizable set of experiences.

Tuscany gives you lots of together time and helps you ease into the vacation. Travel to Rome and the experience changes. A local guide leads you around the city, incorporating legendary sights and some treats just for the kids. For example, you’ll tour the Roman Forum and Colosseum, then the children will spend the afternoon at gladiator school (it’s non-violent and really impresses the style of the time). Rome is also a great city for families as its center is mostly pedestrianized. Relax on the piazzas and take your time watching the world go by.

Fly to Paris, a city of innumerable icons. Everyone wants to see something else, that’s usually the way in the French capital. The guide helps spread the world-famous sights over three days, punctuating them with more local hands-on experiences, such as learning how to bake Parisian croissants. The skill of a good local guide isn’t just the stories and knowledge, it’s maximizing your time while minimizing queues and crowds. This is very much about what you want to experience in Paris, all the way from frog legs to the palace at Fontainebleau.

End the vacation with six days in Switzerland, a country that is often misunderstood. Grand mountains look down from all angles. Open valleys provide space to be alone as a family. Adventures take place on high but there is culture as well, not least in small pedestrianized villages. Spend three days in Zurich, ideal for growing into all things Swiss, from fondue to the Alps. Then end the vacation with three days in Jungfrau, an alpine retreat to bring plenty of calm after the adventure. Like in Tuscany you have a rental vehicle and these final days are self-guided, with many options when you’re so deep in the Alps.

We loved everything about our trip to Tuscany. We had great, comfortable hotels as bases to explore the beautiful countryside and towns. Our hotels had kind, welcoming staff. Zicasso's travel company provided helpful suggestions and reserved non-touristy restaurants and enjoyable, interesting activities: eating in Florence, wine tasting in Montalcino, and cheese making in Pienza.
