Wurzburg - Let the Fairytale Begin
Unconventional though it may be, your personal fairytale will begin in the high-rise metropolitan of Frankfurt, where your feet will first touch German soil. Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and set off on your adventure.
Gaze out the window as skyscrapers give way to rolling hills, then forests and finally vineyards. It won’t be long — roughly 90 minutes —before you find yourself in the charming town of Würzburg, the northern gateway to the Romantic Road.
The strength of character defines this place and its people. After being left in ruins following an airstrike in 1945, its citizens insisted that Würzburg be restored to its pre-war glory. They succeeded and today the town charms its visitors with a variety of architectural styles — Romanesque, Baroque, and Rococo — a domineering fortress and delicious white wine.
Begin your exploration at the 11th century Romanesque St. Kilian Cathedral in the center of the old town, then step into the neighboring Domschatz to see the opulent riches. Move on to Neumünster, a former abbey, and admire its spectacular red sandstone baroque façade. Although modest, the Rathaus (town hall) is also worth a visit, as is the adjoining Grafeneckart — a little museum with an exhibition of photographs and a 3D model of the city that depicts the devastation left behind by the 1945 bombing.
In the afternoon, cross the Alte Mainbrücke — Würzburg’s oldest bridge — and walk up to the town’s most identifiable landmark: the Marienberg Fortress. Aside from postcard scenery, this historic fortress offers gardens and several museums for you to explore. While you’re on this side of the river, visit the Käppele — an 18th-century chapel, which affords beautiful views of the fortress and old town.
A stay in Würzburg wouldn’t be complete without visiting the UNESCO-listed Residenz, one of the most impressive Baroque palaces in Germany. Take a turn through its gardens, admire its grandiose interiors, and don’t forget to look up when you get to the Treppenhaus (staircase) to see the largest fresco in the world.
Finish your day with a glass (or two) of the area’s celebrated white wine at the Juliusspital, which not only bears historical importance as a medieval wine cellar and hospital but also has the distinct honor of being the second-largest winery in Germany and a brilliant place to try the local drop.

Detailed Description
The Romantic Road in the south of Germany is irresistibly — well — romantic. It winds its way through a landscape of magical forests, rugged mountains, sleepy townships, and fairytale castles, encountering a UNESCO World Heritage site or two along the way. The area also offers a rich cultural experience — the crafts, traditions and customs of the region are proudly upheld, giving visitors an intimate glance into Bavarian life.
Begin your seven-day fairytale adventure at the northern gateway of the Romantic Road, Würzburg, and see a mighty fortress and an 18th-century palace with the largest fresco in the world. Move on to one of the world’s best preserved medieval towns, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and experience what life was like during the Middle Ages, then stop by traditional Bavarian villages on the way to the historic city of Augsburg.
Further south, near the border of Austria, meet the enchanting town of Füssen and the magnificent SchlossSchloß Neuschwanstein — the castle that inspired Disney. While in the area, visit two other royal palaces — the decadent Schlossß Hochenschwangau and the whimsical Schlossß Linderhof — as well as the magnificent Baroque Ettal abbey. Then set off for Bavaria’s capital, Munich. Breathe in the city’s vibrant culture, while exploring its architecturally profound landmarks, museums and parks, and trying traditional cuisine and — of course — the famous Munich “helles” (pale lager).

Our Zicasso travel coordinator was extremely responsive, which we highly value. She spent weeks adjusting and discussing our custom itinerary to meet our needs. We asked so many questions about payment and options while building trust; she never faltered in her patience, professionalism, and kind support.
When it came time for our trip, everything flowed with our custom itinerary. We are seasoned travelers, so we were not annoyed by some minor inconviences and the company's WhatsApp help desk team was super-responsive and even proactive. Each day they provided our next day's itinerary. They worked hard for us to make some "in-the-moment" changes and we always felt supported and cared for.
One hotel was not four stars, as described, but locals explained it had recently changed management. One guide was a bit intrusive and lacked boundaries, but we did not hesitate to provide those suppliers with our direct feedback either; we know it was not on our travel company.
So, in summary, everything was a great experience, just be clear to have the right expectations and share any feedback directly with sub-contractors, but also follow up with the travel company.

We just got back from a wonderful trip touring Germany. Zicasso's travel expert did a great job planning out our trip and everything went well, as planned. He was quick and efficient in planning our trip, listened to our wants and needs, and got us what we wanted in the budget that we indicated.
Months after all was planned, the airline changed its schedule and we had to move all hotels and tours to a different date. Our agent took care of everything for us and didn't charge anything extra for all the hassle he had to go through. I really appreciated that he put the clients interest first and just handled it like a professional, since the change wasn't our fault.
Every tour guide and driver showed up on time or even early, and we didn't have any problems during our trip. I highly recommend this travel company and tour agent if you are looking to visit Germany or the surrounding countries.

To everyone at Zicasso's travel agency, thank you, thank you, thank you! The private trip to the most remarkable European metropolises you curated for us was, well, in the words of the countries we visited, csodálatos/wunderbar/wunderbar/and trés magnifique!!!!!
Everything and everyone you arranged for us was not only to our liking, but perfect.
The hotels were as we like, boutique, not large conglomerate chains. Each was nicely situated, with the staff attentive. The one we found best was in Berlin, with the others not far behind.
The drivers were all nice, on time, and helpful. The tour guides were all informative and knowledgeable, and answered our many questions with aplomb. While all were good, we found the two guides in Berlin to be our favorites. And while she knew her subject matter, we found the one in Vienna too religious and opinionated. We suggest maybe not using her as much.
We did not really use any of the restaurant recommendations you supplied because we like to find local eateries close to the hotels. Two we went to twice because the first experience was so good – in Berlin and in Paris.
One note: there were two times we took a cab whose driver, after taking us, said they did not accept cash and passed a card scanner for me to tap. Afterward, I received an alert from Visa that the charge was $98 rather than the $9 quoted in Budapest and $168 rather than the $12 quoted in Paris. We suggest letting everyone know to only take cabs that accept cash or take an Uber.
Once again I would like to thank all of you who endeavored to make this adventure such a pleasant and memorable one.
All the best,
Rick and Barb Boyko

One word... outstanding! From my first contact with our Zicasso travel agent saying he would be happy to help us plan our trip to receiving our travel documents, he was exceptional. When he first reached out, I shared the purpose of visiting Germany from America was to attend our granddaughter's baptism with family. The purpose was not a trip of a lifetime, but we were interested in adding side trips and shared our interests. He created a perfect itinerary. Our trip included Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Nuremberg, and Munich, with transport, hotels, which were always in the perfect spot, and amazing things to do, with interesting tours and wonderful guides.
Our travel partner was always easy to get a hold of, with a quick response. There was great collaboration and great ideas. We may not have intended it to be a trip of a lifetime, but it turned out that it was! He started as a travel advisor and agent, and ended as a friend.
When all details were complete, he handed over our itinerary and details to his colleague, who was equally efficient and friendly,
I am very grateful he picked up my request when I was browsing around, not knowing where to start in planning this trip … and there was Zicasso … and our agent! Thank you!
