Kilbrittain – Arrive in Dublin with an Exploratory Scenic Drive to Kilbrittain

Dublin is a city of mystique, beauty, history, and culture running along the banks of the River Liffey. Antique pubs fill with music, and the Guinness factory whirls and swirls with glasses of dark stout filling the bar with the aromas of caramel and coffee. The leather-bound books in the library at Trinity College run the length of the nearly 215-foot long gallery where 200,000 antique volumes reside. Upon your arrival at Dublin International Airport, you will pick up your comfortable rental car and travel southwest towards Kilbrittain. The drive through the Midlands provides a distinctive view of rolling Irish hills and lush plains. Sheep and cows graze on the emerald grasses that spread across the idyllic landscape before you reach the Ruins of the Rock of Dunamase.

The historical walls stand atop a rocky outcropping reaching 150 feet above the plain. The castle was a stronghold during the Hiberno-Norman period in the 12th century. The limestone cliff protrudes from the grass with streaks of silver against the jade tufts and sporadic yellow wildflowers. Towers, gates, and archways continue to dot the precipice where the medieval ruins resemble an enchanting pastoral painting along the lush landscape. Upon reaching the town of Kilbrittain, you immediately notice the whale skeleton on display in the public park. The fin whale beached itself on near the town in 2009 and has become a symbol of the town and its strong community spirit.

Detailed Description

The Wild Atlantic Way is an unforgettable coastal road divided into six regions, each offering their own unmistakable charms, ambiance, and scenery. Your 9-day Ireland tour allows you to discover the beautiful scenery and wealth of history at the pace you prefer, driving the easy country roads for memorable views of the Haven Coast, Southern Peninsula, Cliff Coast, Bay Coast, Surf Coast, and Northern Headlands. The journey begins with your arrival at the International Airport in Dublin where you will pick up your car and make the drive to Kilbrittain, southwest of the capital.

Pubs, cobbled lanes, and historical castles pepper the drive across the country, offering insight into Ireland’s cultural heritage. Surfers have taken to the coasts, riding the curling waves around the powdery sand beaches. Hikers enjoy the combination of rugged limestone cliffs and wide emerald plains. You can stroll around ancient rock fortresses and listen to the Atlantic waters crash against the boulders at the base of towering bluffs. Traverse the Ring of Kerry, famous for its outlandish scenery, including Skellig Michael, a staggering rugged island upon which the ruins of an ancient monastery stand. Enjoy the casual ambiance of the seaside villages known for their views, beaches, and quaint marinas where visitors can enjoy dolphin and whale watching tours.

The Cliffs of Moher offer a magnificent terrain unlike any other along the Wild Atlantic Way, Burren National Park features chocolate tours and the unique natural contours of the landscape, and Galway erupts with traditional Irish culture in its music, language, and literature. It is easy to fall in love with the scenery of Connemara National Park or to take part in a sheep dog demonstration. The windswept plains of Achill Island contrast the rich grasses inland from the mainland’s coast. Discover statues of WB Yeats and Oscar Wilde or find the tomb of ancient queens. Ireland 50th Anniversay Trip Review: Private Driver, Castle, Museums, History, Culture, 8 Days

This was the first part of a trip to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. It included our children and grandchildren aged 15, 14, and 10; nine of us in total for eight days all over Ireland in an 11-person van. It was memorable beyond words. It was planned terrifically by Zicasso's travel company, with one exception, and our driver/guide was exceptional. We appreciated his knowledge, humor, and flexibility.

The tours and activities were excellent. We especially liked the Jeanie Johnston famine ship tour, the EPIC museum, the Book of Kells, the sheep dog tour, feeding a baby lamb, the falcon demonstration, and the many historic sites we saw.

Our hotel in Dublin, the hotel in Cork, and most especially the hotel in County Clare were fantastic and well worth the cost. The hotel in Kerry was good as well, but unless you are determined to be in downtown Galway, do not go to the one near Eyre Square. We should have planned to stay an extra day at the hotel/castle and drive into Galway. That was the only planning mistake. There is no way that hotel deserves a four-star rating; two-and-a-half for me.

We are now on the second part of the trip to Northern Ireland without the family, just my husband and I, and except for the rainy day that cancelled a planned boat trip, so far so good. We also have an excellent driver/guide.

Ireland Vacation Review: Galway, 11-Night Trip

The trip was fantastic. Zicasso's trip expert did a wonderful job. The only suggestion would be to warn off senior citizens about the Blarney Stone stop. We informed them of our ages. The attraction involved an hour and 20 minutes wait, then climbing to the top of the castle via a very narrow circular stone staircase. My wife, being 71 years of age, had a bad time with this, but we still did it. The only other issue was having to pay for parking in Galway. The cost was 30 euros a night. We did tell the agent about our experience in New Zealand and having to pay for parking as an add-on, and that we didn't want that.

Zicasso's travel agency put together a wonderful itinerary for us. We covered a lot of territory and got to see a lot of the country in eight days. The agency was easy to work with, very responsive, and even helped us switch hotels for our last night. I recommend working with them.

Ireland, Scotland Travel Review: Edinburgh, Dublin, Connemara, Kylemore Abbey, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, Kilkenny, Rock of Cashel, 2 Weeks

We had a wonderful trip. Everything went smoothly. We liked that we were always in contact through WhatsApp. That was very helpful and gave us a security blanket.

Our itinerary was planned through a Zicasso travel expert. The guides/drivers she chose were terrific. They were full of information and stories of each place we visited, and they answered all of our questions. One of a few outstanding ones was in Scotland. We had him on two occasions and enjoyed his knowledge and wit. The knowledge of our guide in Edinburgh was outstanding. The tour in Dublin was with a super guide. He is sending us a recap of our tour. In Ireland, for our tour of Connemara and Kylemore Abbey, our guide was wonderful with his knowledge of the area and his charm and wit. We had a great time with him. In Killarney, we had a guide for the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula. He gave us a map with both days highlighted so we would remember where we were. He took us to the most beautiful places and had so much information and charm. We had two days with him and they were wonderful. Our Kilkenny guide went out of his way to get us as close to the Rock of Cashel. He also had so much information as we traveled. All these tour guides/drivers were so good. Our travel specialist did such a fantastic job of choosing this guides!!
