Vasto – Arrive in Rome and Transfer to Vasto for a Delicious Dinner
Italy’s central region of Abruzzo retains an unspoiled ambiance accentuated by endless stretches of the Adriatic coastline and the wild, rugged terrain of the Apennines Mountains. Rock walls lead to dramatic peaks. Turquoise waters lap against opulent white, sandy beaches. Historical monasteries and castles rise out of the hillsides with prestigious walls. Your flight lands at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon your arrival. You pass towns that continue to maintain the enchanting look of their medieval facades, while nestled in the isolated hilltops.
The blend of secluded towns and sprouting castles lends credence to the legend that Abruzzo is the ancient center of magic in Italy. The Ruins of Ocre Castle are perched on an outcrop on the foundations of a Roman acropolis. The standing walls wrap around the ruins of a village and lead to a 14th-century church. The steep, craggy cliff overlooks the verdant valley leading to the snowcapped peaks of the Apennines. You reach your gorgeous accommodation at the heart of Vasto, which overlooks the shimmering waters of the Adriatic Sea.
The medieval center reflects the fashion and architecture of the 15th century. The breeze carries hints of the briny aroma of the water blending with the herbaceous grasses on the outskirts west of town. The golden shoreline glints in the fading sunlight and you can see the lighthouse crowning Punta della Penna Harbor. Cafes set out tables and chairs along the cobblestones of the charming center at Piazza Rossetti. Indulge with an introduction to the traditional cuisine of the region at dinner with a multi-course meal, beginning with Mussels of Vasto, which consists of mussels stuffed with breadcrumbs, garlic, and parsley in a blend of olive oil, lemon juice, and tomato sauce.

We had a fantastic experience for a first-time trip to Italy. I wasn't sure how this would be, considering I learned about Zicasso while trying to plan the trip myself. Zicasso put me in touch with a travel specialist and the whole team was incredibly responsive to my many, many questions. If they were ever annoyed, it didn’t show.
I really wanted a smooth experience for my family of five, including three teens, one of whom has Celiac. Our agent was great in helping plan out the experience we wanted. As you may know, it is challenging to find rooms for five in Europe, but the travel company found apartments (usually two bedrooms with a pull-out couch) in the heart of town. You can really customize what you do, but we elected to plan our own meals and handle some of our own transport. We did have one issue where the van driver taking us to the train failed to show. I got one with Uber and the travel company quickly (I mean before we got home quickly!) refunded that amount.
Our contact in Italy was amazing and patient. I can’t give her enough credit. Any time I was unsure of something, she was there. The tours were great, especially Florence and Rome. You may be able to find the companies online, but ours seems to have the connections to get the best guides.
As for meals, we didn’t have any issues. We used an app and got a few recommendations from the travel company and local guides. Even our wine-tasting tour out in Tuscany was accommodating.
I would use our travel company and Zicasso again. I think the only downside is we tried to cram a lot in and it was hot. I probably should have asked for one to two fewer or shorter walking tours, especially on days we switched cities. Otherwise, it was excellent.

The drivers were timely, professional, and very prompt. The guides were very knowledgeable and generally designed the tours to match our requests. The hotels were exceptional and our only comment is that there was an odd odor in our room in one of the hotels.
Our only true complaint would be about the wine tasting on May 22. The location was not aware of our reservation. The couple running the vineyard seemed confused by our arrival. After a bit, they offered to accommodate us, but we felt like we were imposing on them. Then, at our lunch at a restaurant on Capri, they did not have a record of a reservation and placed us at a table without a view, near the entrance. We made the best of the meal, but for the price we paid, we would have expected confirmed reservations and a table with a view.

Zicasso’s tour operator planned the most amazing trip to Italy for us! My requirements were culture, romance, and relaxation. She delivered on every aspect. Although we missed our tour of the Vatican due to the Pope's funeral, my husband and I actually attended his funeral!! Our hotel, though planned many months before, was next to the basilica where Pope Francis was laid to rest. Talk about being a part of history!
We stayed in a beautiful converted villa to boutique hotel in Florence; got whisked away through the Tuscan countryside in a vintage Fiat 500; took cooking classes; sipped lovely wine, accompanied by excellent lunches on our winery tours; soaked in Italy's rich culture and museum scene; and even ticked the relaxation box by spending time by the pool, in the spa, and resting on our large deck overlooking the Amalfi coastline.
Every tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable, and it was evident they loved their jobs. Between memories of the boat ride along the Amalfi Coast, tips from the cooking classes I have already started using at home, and the cases of wine we are eagerly awaiting delivery of, my husband and I will forever hold Italy in our hearts and la dolce vita it provided us.
Talk with our tour operator; you will be glad you did!

From start to finish, Zicasso's travel agents handled our trip beautifully.
The highlights were the private boat trip on Lake Como, as our captain and guide was excellent. The private drive through Tuscany, seeing small villages. The lunch and wine tour at Sant'Agnese was wonderful; the chicken recipe superb. The vinegars and oils of 10 to 30 years in the making, along with the wine, were excellent.
Both agents were always there for us along our trip, which made it so nice to know how responsive they always were. Our family trip to Italy was all we hoped for and more. We thank the agency so much for helping us make family memories in beautiful Italy.

Our experience with Zicasso’s travel specialist was nothing short of spectacular – truly a five-star journey from beginning to end!
From the start, she took the time to truly understand our preferences and how we wanted to spend our time in Italy. Her attention to detail and thoughtful planning resulted in a memorable and seamless trip that exceeded all our expectations.
Our agent’s dedication showed in every part of our itinerary – she regularly checked in to ensure we had all the information we needed for meeting times and locations, which made everything run smoothly. The quality of the private tours – from the Vespa tour of Rome to the Colosseum and the Naples food tour (Fiorella) – was exceptional. Each guide was a knowledgeable local who welcomed us warmly, even meeting us at our hotel or the train station.
One highlight was our private cooking class in Sorrento, which was absolutely unforgettable. We prepared a delicious four-course meal and enjoyed it with wine pairings – all in an intimate, welcoming setting. The head chef and entire staff made us feel like royalty!
The hotels our agent selected were comfortable, well-located, and offered fabulous breakfasts – we’re still dreaming of the daily cappuccinos! All transportation was pre-arranged, from private airport and train transfers to train tickets from Rome to Sorrento. It made a world of difference in reducing travel stress.
Our agent also helped us with restaurant recommendations and reservations, especially those that needed a local touch. Dining was an important part of our trip and every meal was a delight – relaxed, flavorful, and perfectly suited to our tastes.
We must also give a special shout-out to the private drivers in Sorrento, who truly went above and beyond – one with his warm personality and homemade pastries, our guide and photographer in Ravello, and our driver who drove us in luxury to our cooking class – each made us feel genuinely cared for and gave us insight into the local culture and lifestyle.
Our memories from this trip will be everlasting and we are deeply grateful to our agent and the rest of our incredible “crew”.
I nostri ricordi saranno eterni e per questo siamo davvero grati al nostro agente e al resto dell'equipaggio.
