Palermo - Introducing Palermo

Palermo’s uniqueness stems from its vibrant architecture, stunning setting, and radiant culture. The jovial calls of vendors at La Vucciria market echo off of the historical walls encompassing the stalls. “Vucciria” means voices in Sicilian dialect, and rings true in the boisterous and jubilant atmosphere of the marketplace. Produce native to the Mediterranean and North African climate thrives in both color and size. Herbs bring a sensual aroma to the pathways. Fresh seafood caught earlier that morning showcases the variety and abundance of what the oceans has offered residents of Sicily for millennia. Your private transfer greets you at the airport and escorts you to a luxurious hotel situated near the heart of the city. You quickly notice that the markets of Palermo offer more than just insight into the local shopping habits and vendor practices of the Italian province. They also embody the eclecticism of the cultures that have traversed and shaped the island.

Detailed Description

Sicily is an island jewel in the Mediterranean, with coastal views that look out across the Strait of Messina to mainland Italy; in the other direction, you can see across the Tyrrhenian Sea to catch glimpses of the shores of Tunisia. The heritage of the island brims a blend of Phoenician, Greek, and Roman, and Carthaginian settlements, followed by Arab and Norman invaders. The blends of civilizations have made the culture of Sicily unique to Italy and the world. Each city has its own characteristics emanating from the architectural style and vibrant marketplaces. Your vacationing in Sicily begins when you arrive in Palermo, where your private transfer escorts you to a beautiful hotel located in the heart of the city.

The following day, you have a guided tour of Palermo and Monreale. The bayside city and architectural beauty of the provincial capital encompass the vast history of Mediterranean exploration by cultures from near and far. The cathedrals of Monreale show inspiring grace. The day is at your leisure to enjoy the city as you please, taking in the magnificent markets or winding through the interesting catacombs. The next day, you leave the capital city behind for the ancient Greek ruins located in the archeological park known as the Valley of the Temples.

Embrace the charming village of Piazza Armerina. The Roman villa outside of town contains a brilliant array of preserved mosaics. Your guide leads you on a majestic tour of Syracuse, once the largest city in the ancient world. Many ruins and antique buildings continue to decorate the cityscape. With a day in Syracuse at your leisure, you can visit the tremendous Greek theater or explore one of the 12 ancient quarries of the old city at Latomia dei Cappuccini.

Next, you travel to Taormina, where you have three days to enjoy the splendor of the town’s seaside location. Your guide leads you on a fabulous tour of the city’s charming streets, lined with palaces and the first seat of Sicilian parliament. Spend time on the opulent beaches on the fringes of Taormina, or escape to the high reaches of Mount Etna on a guided hike of the volcanic landscape. On your final day, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and transfers you to the Catania airport for your flight home.

Italy, Malta Trip Review: City Tour, 20 Days

I was very pleased with the entire planning of the trip. The communication with Zicasso's tour company was excellent. The meals that were pre-arranged by them were fantastic and we probably would not have found them on our own.

Italy Trip Review: Matera, Puglia, Locorotondo, Lecce, Salento, Ostuni, Otranto, Galatina, Boat Ride, Hiking, Wine Tasting, Cheese Experience, Countryside, 17 Nights

My husband and I had utilized the services of Zicasso for prior journeys to Italy, Southeast Asia, and Australia/New Zealand. For our recent trip to Matera and Puglia, I requested an agency located in Italy that specializes in travel to Italy. We selected a company that was on a magazine’s A-list of travel advisors.

Our travel consultant listened to and respected my requests for certain activities (private food, historical and boat tours, wine tastings, cheese making) and types of accommodations (properties that offered a shaded area to relax and read). She also emailed answers to my numerous detail-oriented questions (the curse of having personally worked as a tour guide). She sent a lovely gift to our first hotel and called halfway through our vacation to check in with us. Communication via text with WhatsApp was convenient and used frequently. Most importantly, when we had a problem with one of our accommodations, she followed up (even after our trip had ended) and graciously offered some compensation.

Italy Family Tour Review: Venice, Tuscany, Rome, Scenery, Local Cuisine, History, Culture, 12 Days

Italy’s beauty is legendary—its rolling landscapes, vibrant culture, incredible cuisine, and deep history are truly one of a kind. But what made our trip truly extraordinary was the care, creativity, and attention to detail that the Zicasso travel company team brought to every part of our journey.

Our 12-day family adventure—with three teenagers!—was the perfect balance of guided exploration, fun hands-on experiences, and thoughtfully chosen hidden gems. Every stop offered something special for each of us, which is no small feat when traveling with a group of different interests.

While we’re fairly seasoned travelers, having the added support of your concierge service via WhatsApp was a game-changer. Any small questions or needs were handled quickly, warmly, and with a level of professionalism that gave us total peace of mind.

And the hotels—just wow. Every property was not only comfortable and welcoming, but also perfectly located, making it easy for us to explore and enjoy each destination to the fullest.

A heartfelt thank you to the entire travel company team for creating such a seamless and memorable experience. We can’t wait to plan our next adventure with you.

Grazie mille and arrivederci for now!

Italy Trip Review: Rome, Florence, Capri, Sorrento, Cooking Classes, Vineyard Dinner, 13 Nights

We just got back from an amazing two-week vacation with our children and our eight-year-old granddaughter. The travel specialists at Zicasso's tour company were incredibly knowledgeable, responsive, and professional. They took all of my ideas and managed to incorporate them seamlessly into our itinerary. I had quite a few requests and even made some last-minute changes, which they accommodated without any hesitation. One specialist, in particular, was exceptionally kind and helpful!

The organization of the trip was smooth and effortless. The transportation, drivers, and guides were all top-notch! We traveled in clean and well-maintained Mercedes vans, with well-dressed and personable drivers. The local guides were not only knowledgeable, but also spoke English clearly, sharing fascinating insights that allowed us to dive deeper into the history and culture. The hotels we stayed at ranged from good to very good. If I were to plan this again, I might choose a different location in Rome; the area was a bit congested and the hotel could use some upgrades, but it was conveniently situated.

The wine tastings were enjoyable and dinner at the vineyard was truly magical! Our standout activities were the cooking classes in Florence and Rome. The chefs were professional and imparted a lot of knowledge, giving us valuable skills to take home.

The highlight of our trip was definitely the private boat charter in Capri! We had a perfect day on a brand-new yacht, with an experienced captain and crew who took us to hidden caves away from the crowds, allowing us to swim in stunning locations. It was an absolutely fantastic trip!

Italy Trip Review: Sirmione, 10 Nights

Zicasso's tour company took care of everything we needed from the start of our engagement. They listened to our interests and worked with us to plan an itinerary that aligned with exactly what we wanted, including adding suggestions that we had not considered, but became the highlights of our trip. Every detail was taken care of and they checked in daily.

The hotels and transportation were top notch, but most impressive was the quality of the guides provided. Every one of them knew the area they were showing us around and because they were local, also had insights and stories that we would not have received on a standard tour. I can't recommend them more highly. We had an incredible experience.
