Florence – Beginning with the Renaissance

The signs of the past are written all over Florence, from the architecture beautifying the historic city-center to the statues in the public squares symbolizing an enlightenment of art and knowledge. The aroma of espresso beans and marzipan emanates from gilded cafes; their doors flank enticing display cases lining Via del Corso. The image of Palazzo Vecchio stands to watch over Piazza Signoria and was erected at the beginning of the 14th century. The Romanesque building continues to house the seat of Florentine government, and casts an imposing shadow over the square, stemming from its adorning tower standing more than 308 feet tall. When you arrive at Florence International Airport, your private transfer is there to greet you, ready to escort you to the city center.

You notice the historic city walls lining the outside of the city center, near Fortress da Basso, dating back to the 13th century, with the outline of the original walls surrounding the central square at Piazza del Duomo, constructed by the Romans. The city is unlike any other you have ever visited, bustling with youthful energy and vigor and brimming with history. Art and architecture students study Florence Cathedral. Sculptures examine the statue of Perseus holding the head of Medusa. Chefs taste the simple flavors of the cityscape, each paying tribute to the traditional tastes of Tuscany. You have just arrived and already feel the wave of the city’s wonders washing over you.

Detailed Description

There is always a delicate balance on Tuscan vacations between visiting the must-see attractions and experiencing the traditional wonders like a local. Your 8-day Italian Renaissance tour of Tuscany offers you the pleasures of both, combining the splendors of Tuscan cities that cannot be missed, along with the embracing culture and quieter marvels that make you feel like you see a completely new and unique side of the Italian province. The journey into the medieval and Renaissance times of Tuscany begins with your arrival in Florence.

The city continues to boast its artwork and artists with elegance. Stroll around the city getting your bearings, traversing the streets and visiting the exemplary church of Santa Croce. The following day, your guide leads you on a full day tour of the city, taking in the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia, and the stunning, yet often passed-over artwork of the church of San Lorenzo. You make your way outside of the city to the charming smaller towns of Pistoia and Prato, both filled with remnants of the Renaissance and medieval histories.

You can also head into the Garfagnana, a sensational nature preserve along the valleys of the Apuan Alps. Continue to Lucca, where the antique ramparts of the city stand strong. After breakfast, you can take your time exploring Lucca under the stunning natural light of the day, followed by an excursion to Pisa to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli, home to the Leaning Tower, and fabulous palaces and churches beyond the legendary square. In Volterra, you immerse yourself in medieval charm and take a step further back in time to discover the Etruscan roots of the city before venturing to the hillside town of San Gimignano.

Traverse the reaches of San Gimignano, from the old city walls to the highest heights of the city towers. When you reach Siena, you will find a medieval city lying in wait, preserved with a tranquil character and a relaxing ambiance. On your tour of the city, you will venture up into the Gates of Heaven to witness a unique panorama of the Siena Cathedral. Journey through Chianti with a private guide, exploring the small towns of Greve, Castellina in Chianti, and Panzano, the latter housing the “Butcher Poet.” On your final day in Tuscany, your private transfer will escort you from your hotel to Florence International Airport for your flight home.

Italy Trip Review: Rome, Venice, Florence, Opera, Walking Tours, 10 Nights

We had a fantastic experience for a first-time trip to Italy. I wasn't sure how this would be, considering I learned about Zicasso while trying to plan the trip myself. Zicasso put me in touch with a travel specialist and the whole team was incredibly responsive to my many, many questions. If they were ever annoyed, it didn’t show.

I really wanted a smooth experience for my family of five, including three teens, one of whom has Celiac. Our agent was great in helping plan out the experience we wanted. As you may know, it is challenging to find rooms for five in Europe, but the travel company found apartments (usually two bedrooms with a pull-out couch) in the heart of town. You can really customize what you do, but we elected to plan our own meals and handle some of our own transport. We did have one issue where the van driver taking us to the train failed to show. I got one with Uber and the travel company quickly (I mean before we got home quickly!) refunded that amount.

Our contact in Italy was amazing and patient. I can’t give her enough credit. Any time I was unsure of something, she was there. The tours were great, especially Florence and Rome. You may be able to find the companies online, but ours seems to have the connections to get the best guides.

As for meals, we didn’t have any issues. We used an app and got a few recommendations from the travel company and local guides. Even our wine-tasting tour out in Tuscany was accommodating.

I would use our travel company and Zicasso again. I think the only downside is we tried to cram a lot in and it was hot. I probably should have asked for one to two fewer or shorter walking tours, especially on days we switched cities. Otherwise, it was excellent.

Italy Tour Review: Tuscany, Florence, Montalcino, Castellina, Chianti, Wine Tasting, Cheese Experience, Local Cuisine, Walking Tour, 9-Day Trip

We loved everything about our trip to Tuscany. We had great, comfortable hotels as bases to explore the beautiful countryside and towns. Our hotels had kind, welcoming staff. Zicasso's travel company provided helpful suggestions and reserved non-touristy restaurants and enjoyable, interesting activities: eating in Florence, wine tasting in Montalcino, and cheese making in Pienza.

Italy Vacation Review: Florence, Venice, Tuscany, Siena, Cooking Class, Tasting Tour, 9-Day Trip

From the moment we began working with Zicasso's trip planner, our every need was met. He listened and planned an epic trip based on our conversations. Then, for our trip, we worked with another trip planner who was extremely responsive and professional, especially when we were in Italy. Any questions we had were promptly answered. Everything they planned was pure luxury and fantastic. The private pick-ups, drivers, and tour guides were absolutely prompt and fantastic. Every tour was super-fun and informative. Highlights included the wonderful hotels, food tour in Florence, tour in Venice, cooking class, and tasting track in Tuscany. I would highly highly recommend. It was a five-star, wonderful trip!

Italy Trip Review: Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Amalfi Coast, Pope Francis’ Funeral, Wine, Cuisine, Culture, Museums, Relaxation, 10 Nights

Zicasso’s tour operator planned the most amazing trip to Italy for us! My requirements were culture, romance, and relaxation. She delivered on every aspect. Although we missed our tour of the Vatican due to the Pope's funeral, my husband and I actually attended his funeral!! Our hotel, though planned many months before, was next to the basilica where Pope Francis was laid to rest. Talk about being a part of history!

We stayed in a beautiful converted villa to boutique hotel in Florence; got whisked away through the Tuscan countryside in a vintage Fiat 500; took cooking classes; sipped lovely wine, accompanied by excellent lunches on our winery tours; soaked in Italy's rich culture and museum scene; and even ticked the relaxation box by spending time by the pool, in the spa, and resting on our large deck overlooking the Amalfi coastline.

Every tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable, and it was evident they loved their jobs. Between memories of the boat ride along the Amalfi Coast, tips from the cooking classes I have already started using at home, and the cases of wine we are eagerly awaiting delivery of, my husband and I will forever hold Italy in our hearts and la dolce vita it provided us.

Talk with our tour operator; you will be glad you did!
