Detailed Description

You arrive in Tokyo, Japan’s capital and the largest city in the world. To help you navigate this bustling metropolis, an expert guide shows you the city’s best sites while avoiding the crowds of other travelers. From an idyllic teahouse or seat on a riverboat cruise, you soak in the city’s ancient and modern beauty.

Matsumoto is a city of treasures. At Matsumoto Castle, learn about the life of the samurai and the commoners who called feudal Japan home. The castle’s gardens are a lovely sight, made more so by the spring cherry blossoms and colorful fall foliage. While in Matsumoto, you take a day trip to Jigokudani, home to Japan’s famous snow monkeys. There, you can get up close with these amazing creatures.

Magome and Tsumago are two restored cities in the Kiso Valley. During the Edo Period (1603-1868), tens of thousands of travelers stopped there during their journey between Kyoto and Tokyo, then called Edo. Today you follow in these travelers’ footsteps, walking on a restored section of the Nakasendo Trail. When you stop for the night, a ryokan inn and delectable cuisine await you, just as it did for travelers in centuries past.

Takayama is one of the most well-preserved cities in Japan. With an expansive old town, the city is a jewel in the heart of the Japanese Alps. From sake breweries to magnificent museums, Takayama provides an incomparable immersion into Japan’s past. While there, you have the opportunity to sample Hida beef, hailed worldwide for its delicate taste and melt-in-your-mouth texture.

From Takayama, you take a day trip to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picturesque is an understatement when describing this immaculate village, where local residents continue practicing the construction techniques handed down over the last 300 years. You can freely wander through the village, learning about everything from house building to silkworm farming.

Kyoto was the birthplace of much of Japan’s culture. Home to innumerable sites, your expert guide shows you the best of these on a leisurely bicycle tour of the city. As you travel between the temples and bamboo groves, it is easy to lose yourself in Kyoto’s natural and manmade wonders.

This tour is perfect for couples, friends, and families. It is best taken in the spring or fall when Japan’s weather is ideal for outdoor touring.

Japan Vacation Review: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Ryokan, Lake Kawaguchiko, 2-Week Tour

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.

The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.

She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.

Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

Japan Travel Review: Tokyo, Private Boat Tour, Food Tour

Zicasso's tour operator really delivered in "Zicasso style" on our three-day stay in Tokyo. We had one very knowledgeable and fun guide for our full visit. That allowed our group to get to know her and she us! We really enjoyed our private yakatabune sail. It was a fun boat with great food and an open bar! And the ramen sampling trip the evening before was informative and fun! All in all, we had a very relaxing and fun time in Tokyo following our two-week travels through the Pacific.

Japan Travel Review: Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Local Cuisine, Boat Ride, Wildlife, Nature, 10-Night Trip

We had a lovely post-Tokyo Marathon trip through Japan. We hit so many highlights and we got to see so much of each area that we visited through jam-packed and enjoyable days. Our tour guide was very helpful, friendly, and flexible to help us see as much as we could. We wish we could have spent another week there!

Japan Tour Review: Nature, Wildlife, Rurality, Agriculture, 5 Nights

This was a five-night trip focused on nature, wildlife, rural, and agricultural places in northeastern Hokkaido. I enjoyed it very much. Zicasso's trip planner found a very good (female) guide to accompany me (traveling solo for this part of my time in Japan) through the region and I always felt safe. My trip planner was attentive to details. She was in touch with my local guide periodically.

This part of Japan is exquisitely beautiful and I hope to return to take in still more wildlife and agricultural/rural areas. I loved all of the places we visited. My favorites were Bihoro Pass and Lake Kussharo, the village of Tsurui (near Kushiro) and the wildlife observation area at Onnenai, Lake Mashū, Shiretoko, the drive from Shiretoko to Memanbetsu Airport, and the drive from Lake Akan to Shiretoko.

Japan Tour Review: Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, Mount Fuji, Geisha Experience, Food Tour, Hiking, Culture, History, 11-Night Trip

As with our other Zicasso trips, this one was incredible as well. Another flawlessly executed multi-city trip. With travel, so much can go wrong. The travel agency was great, from initial planning all the way through the whole trip. They provide great communication (very responsive) and are experts in helping visitors experience all that Japan has to offer.

Japan Travel Review: Kyoto, Tokyo, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Hakone/Gora, Tea Ceremony, Kimono Fitting, Biking, 12-Day Tour

We had a good trip overall and enjoyed all of the hotels our travel agent selected. Some of the guides, however, were not excellent. We were also surprised when the bullet train tickets delivered to our hotel were for the wrong destination. I'm so glad I checked this before we left Tokyo; the local agent was able to replace the tickets promptly, albeit not with first-class tickets. I had the unique experience of working with two Zicasso Japan specialists--this one for 12 days family time on Honshu and another for rural/nature exploring on Hokkaido. I therefore have a basis for comparison, and I can say that this agency was less careful or attentive to many details. Another example is that we did not receive a finalized itinerary with guide details before we left for Japan. That came only after I let the agency know about the train ticket problem. Also, our itinerary did not have any information in the Japanese language. This led to repeated problems with taxi drivers who didn't know where the (newish) hotel in Kyoto was. We needed that information in Japanese to facilitate transfers to and from the train station, etc. Seems like a significant oversight.
