Detailed Description
According to Japanese mythology, the island nation was formed from the droplets of water that fell from the god Izanagi’s spear. In doing so, Izanagi created a land that could remain insulated from outside influence for centuries. From these circumstances grew one of the world’s most unique cultures. On your exploratory Japan tours, you will travel back through time to uncover the powerful forces that created the archipelago and the historical and religious roots from which Japanese culture blossomed.
You’ll soon be swept off to Japan’s thousand-year capital, Kyoto—home to a millennium of imperial and religious history. In two days, you’ll visit four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and meditate before vast rock gardens, the gravel combed in wavelike imitation. Sit beside tranquil temple ponds watching the still reflections of trees and temple grounds that have stood the test of time. Humble yourself before grand pagodas and imposing bamboo forests. Kyoto has a way of imparting even the most restless heart with a calm reverence for simplicity, impermanence, and nature.
On the southern island of Kyushu, you’ll summit several of Japan’s most fearsome volcanic peaks, affording you a far-reaching view of a craggy and craterous land formed from geological upheaval. By night, you’ll rest your body in an onsen, a time-honored Japanese hot springs said by some to have healing properties. Stand at the mythological site where the god Ninigi descended to Earth to propagate the Imperial Family and watch as this creation story is told to you through the pageantry and dance of locals. Then descend to the feudal farmlands, castles, and villas once controlled by the powerful Shimazu clan and learn how these Samurai strongmen bent Kyushu to their will.
You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide whose knowledge of the land and culture will add further depth to your understanding. And as you stay in homey ryokans—traditional Japanese inns—and sample the best of Japanese cuisine, your appreciation for this unique culture will undoubtedly blossom.

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.
The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.
She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.
Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

We had a lovely post-Tokyo Marathon trip through Japan. We hit so many highlights and we got to see so much of each area that we visited through jam-packed and enjoyable days. Our tour guide was very helpful, friendly, and flexible to help us see as much as we could. We wish we could have spent another week there!

As with our other Zicasso trips, this one was incredible as well. Another flawlessly executed multi-city trip. With travel, so much can go wrong. The travel agency was great, from initial planning all the way through the whole trip. They provide great communication (very responsive) and are experts in helping visitors experience all that Japan has to offer.

Zicasso's tour operator really delivered in "Zicasso style" on our three-day stay in Tokyo. We had one very knowledgeable and fun guide for our full visit. That allowed our group to get to know her and she us! We really enjoyed our private yakatabune sail. It was a fun boat with great food and an open bar! And the ramen sampling trip the evening before was informative and fun! All in all, we had a very relaxing and fun time in Tokyo following our two-week travels through the Pacific.
