Istanbul – Soaking up Ottoman Charms

Istanbul's Ottoman treasures aren't restricted to its renowned wonders. Ornate sculpted stone lines streets of cobblestone and intrigue. Mosques are camouflaged within bustling markets of rainbow colors. Juice vendors squash fruit beneath the domes of history. And your hotel radiates the opulence of the Ottoman Empire. Each corridor is lined with antiques and an intricately carved four poster bed dominates your room. Gaze across the rooftops from the window and absorb the skyline. Then head out onto the streets and find something to admire with every footstep. Settling into Istanbul's beauty comes naturally but let's quickly rewind to earlier in the day. You're picked up from the airport by a luxury chauffeur and transferred to the Ottoman-style hotel in central Sultanahmet. Relax and settle in. The hotel's prime location enables easy wanderings through pedestrianized streets with 2,000 years of history.

Detailed Description

On the surface, Turkey is a country of lavish splendor and ancient grandeur. But delve beneath this rich exterior and the country's heart lies in the enchanting traditions of its villages and local lifestyles. Life continues as it has for many centuries; floral dressed women natter on village benches, families spend hours over lunchtime, and an endearing hospitality has survived in the modern world. This village-based itinerary seems to take you back in time, immersing you in the culture and charms of an ancient era. Sleep in quaint homestays and spend evenings with local families. Enjoy whole days soaking up the rhythm of villages clinging to mountaintops. Sit down to vast mezes, the dishes spread across an intricate tablecloth and washed down with sweet cups of tea. Including seven nights spent in authentic and intimate homestays, this vacation uncovers the heart and soul of Turkey, taking you on a journey to a bygone time when hospitality was the marker of social wealth.

Of course, no visit to Turkey would be complete without historical musings and architectural wonder. This trip starts and ends in Istanbul, a city of treasures dating to Roman and Ottoman times. Exotic markets unfurl mountains of color, hypnotic mosques cast serene hues across ornate interiors, and every narrow street reveals another boutique relic. From Istanbul you head into off the beaten track Turkey, a beautiful drive weaving east to your first host family. Village experiences are interspersed with rarely seen historical sites as you head towards Ankara. Expect to drink tea with the locals, explore villages that rarely see tourists, and absorb the irrefutable hospitality of the region. You're intrigued and fascinated, but the locals are equally curious of you. Questions are asked, photos are taken, and cultures come together on the beautiful valleys of central Turkey.

On day six you head further east to the lunar landscapes of Cappadocia. While this region of bizarre geology is one of Turkey's most celebrated destinations, you discover a new angle by spending four nights at a traditional village homestay. Spend the days touring the rock-carved churches and ethereal landscapes, each valley subtly completing the impression of being transported to a mythical world. A hot air balloon flight amplifies the metaphorical journey but the host family helps keep you grounded. Dinners are to be savored, enjoyed over a couple of hours as the sun cast new tones across Cappadocia. Bonds are forged and stories shared. This is not merely an invite. Like all the homestays, it's a family opening their home and receiving guests in a time honored tradition. Return to Istanbul on day 10 where a 16th century hamam offers a salubrious final memory of the country.

Turkey Vacation Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Basilica Cistern, Bosphorus Cruise, Hot-Air Balloon Ride, Dinner at Agent's Home, Underground City, 12 Nights

This was my second Zicasso trip, the first being to Peru in 2024, so I had full confidence in their travel company and was delighted by the level of care and attention to detail throughout the trip.

I essentially had three trips while in Turkey. I arrived a day early to attend a six-day cooking school that was independently arranged. The travel company smoothly organized my airport pickup and first-night hotel. After the cooking school, I was again booked in the original hotel (old town, close to major sites, clean, nice), and my daughter joined me for a week-long tour of Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Ephesus.

The guides in each region were knowledgeable, though we could have made do with fewer facts (height in meters of the Blue Mosque, area in square meters of Hagia Sophia, number of sheep in the country) and had more free time to explore on our own. We loved the major Istanbul sites, the Bosphorus cruise, and lunch on the Asia side. We were delighted with our cave hotel in Cappadocia and the hot-air balloon ride on my daughter's birthday. We loved strolling through Ephesus.

All the internal flights were arranged, booked, and checked in by the agent, so all we had to do was show up on time. The vans that transported us were clean and nice, with good drivers. After my daughter left, I was booked for three nights on a gulet, with stops on the Mediterranean. It was a nice way to slow down and finish the busy trip.

The highlight of my travels was dinner at my agent's home with his lovely family. He even arranged for me to find some earrings like those of his mother, which I had admired, and then drove me to the airport. Above and beyond!

Egypt, Turkey Travel Review: Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Cairo, Luxor, Private Guides, 2 Weeks

Our journey through Turkey and Egypt in May 2025 with Zicasso's travel company was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we landed until our final departure, every detail was thoughtfully arranged, making the experience seamless, immersive, and truly unforgettable.

What set this trip apart was our exceptional tour guides. In both countries, the guides were not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also passionate, warm, and attentive. They brought the rich histories of Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Cairo, Luxor, and beyond vividly to life. Whether we were exploring ancient ruins or navigating vibrant bazaars, our guides made every moment engaging and meaningful.

A special mention must go to our tour organizer. His behind-the-scenes coordination, quick responsiveness, and personal care were evident throughout. He ensured every transition was smooth, every need was anticipated, and every traveler felt individually looked after. His dedication and professionalism elevated the entire experience.

We returned home with a deeper appreciation of these remarkable destinations, lasting memories, and a strong desire to travel again with our travel company. We highly recommended them for anyone seeking a thoughtfully curated, high-touch travel experience.

Turkey Tour Review: Cappadocia, Turkish Bath Experience, Cave Hotel, Cave Exploration, Underground City, 8 Nights

Zicasso’s tour company did an outstanding job of planning our trip to Turkey, a trip which included everything we wanted to see in this amazing country.

The hotels were lovely, very clean, and situated in areas that made it very easy to get around, whether with our guide or on our own.

However, what really made the trip so special were the guides chosen by our travel agent. Each guide was extremely knowledgeable and licensed, only after extensive education and testing.  Our agent made sure our in-country flights were taken care of, tipping was included, so we did not have to worry about that, and all local tours were arranged. Finally, he was in contact with us as needed via WhatsApp to ensure things were going smoothly. I would not hesitate to recommend his travel company to anyone looking to explore this part of the world!
