Detailed Description

The history of the Pacific dates back thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. Some 250 Aboriginal tribes – or countries – covered Australia, each with their own distinct language and customs. Maori culture is equally complex, dozens of different tribes rowing out in their wakas (canoes) to meet the colonial invaders. This unique 16-day journey takes you behind the stereotypes and cliches, unraveling the mystery and heritage of the continent's indigenous residents. You'll see the famous red rock of Uluru, but you'll explore it through a cultural lens that challenges typical narratives. You'll admire Maori life in remote villages and piece together the intricate challenge of tradition meeting modernity. You'll go on journeys to the final heartlands of both Aboriginal and Maori culture, places far from everywhere that keep alive the true spirit of the countries' ancestors.

Spend nine days in Australia, starting in Sydney and an alternative walking tour that reveals some of the truths behind the first European landing in the country. An Aboriginal guide helps introduce local culture and how it relates to an urban context, and you have time to explore Sydney's famous waterfront sights. Fly to Australia's red center and marvel at the mystery of Kata Tjuta and Uluru, two sacred destinations for Aboriginal people. Next, you journey deep into the remote Kakadu National Park, with unique permissions to visit Aboriginal territories within the park. This is Australia's only true citadel of indigenous culture, an expansive stretch of scorched land and waterfalls that remain mostly in Aboriginal hands. Nowhere else can reveal their traditions and culture with such intimacy.

Completing the Australian leg of the itinerary are two days around Cairns and Daintree Rainforest. Here you learn two integral customs: paint with bamboo sticks and earth paint, telling your own story through cryptic dots and lines; then take a journey through forest and coast to find all the unusual foods that hide within the landscape. Like each day on this handcrafted itinerary you're with a different mob, or tribe, learning how Aboriginal culture is far more diverse than what we know as Western culture.

Fly to Auckland for two relaxed days in the City of Sails. A Maori guide helps showcase the iconic traditions of the land and you begin to piece together the stories of the people. Rotorua is arguably the beating heart of modern Maori life and your two days here reveal exploding geysers, war dances, and ingenious methods of cooking. Completing the itinerary is an exclusive opportunity to spend the night in a Maori village on the Bay of Islands. You'll be guests of the Ngapuhi tribe, rowing out to their island base in a traditional waka and fully submerging yourself in their lifestyles. Like every day of your Australia and New Zealand journey, there's a wonderful lesson in the symbiotic coexistence of man and nature.

New Zealand, Australia Trip Review: Sydney, Great Barrier Reef, Dart River, Phillip Island, Dinner Cruise, Rainforest, Wildlife, Snorkeling, Helicopter Ride, Boat Tour, 23 Nights

Thanks to the amazing, perfectly planned Australia and New Zealand vacation itinerary provided by Zicasso's travel agency, and specifically the travel agent and her wonderful colleagues, this was the perfect vacation. We were well taken care of and flights were planned within the countries, with someone always greeting us at the next stop to move us through to our next adventure.

We were always busy and saw the most wonderful things... a sunset dinner cruise on Sydney harbor, the march of the penguins at Phillip Island (she arranged for us to have a front-row seat!), snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and touring the rainforest with an Aboriginal guide was very interesting! She arranged for many tours and activities, like a jet boat ride up the Dart River, a helicopter ride onto a glacier, and a TranzAlpine train ride in New Zealand. We also had a first-time-ever encounter with a pod of orca while on a boat tour in New Zealand. The whole trip was an unforgettable experience!

We wished we had taken the travel agent's advice and stayed longer. There was so much to see. We packed a lot into our four short weeks thanks to them. We highly recommend using them to plan your Australia and New Zealand itinerary.

Australia, New Zealand Trip Review: Tasmania, Rotorua, Uluru, Queenstown, Luging, Camel Ride, Wildlife, Hobbiton, Islands, Glowworm Cave, 2 Weeks

We absolutely loved so much of our trip! My kids’ (ages 11 and eight) favorite activities were luging in Rotorua, NZ, and the sunset camel ride in Uluru, AU, while my husband and I were enchanted by Hobbiton and enjoyed exploring a glowworm cave with the owner's father! We all loved Tasmania.

There were a few hiccups. However, we were very happy with all the support the Zicasso travel company's team provided in real time to help us get back on track.

The overall trip was fantastic. My husband and I appreciated having the team support our adventures, both the highs and the lows. The team members were detailed-oriented. This trip exceeded our expectations and we’re incredibly grateful for their expertise in curating such memorable experiences.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Glowworm Night Tour, Maori Experience, Culture, Nature, Local Cuisine, Scenery, 11-Night Trip

I really want to thank the travel specialist from Zicasso's travel agency for such amazing planning. My vacation in New Zealand was great, everything flowed flawlessly, and all the activities she suggested were really fun and varied. I got to see some incredible, breathtaking scenery.

All the tour guides were amazing and very knowledgeable, but special mention to the guide for the glowworm tour; he was incredible! The Māori experience was one of my favorite activities as I was able to really get a grasp of the culture, their music, energy, and food. And last, but definitely not least, the guide from the food tour really made my birthday very special! I am looking forward to coming back soon.

Australia, New Zealand Vacation Review: Sydney, Queenstown, Private Tours, 23 Days

The itinerary was awesome! We had a few snafus with hotel reservations, but they were quickly resolved. The tours were perfect and all private, with excellent guides. The pace made good use of the time we had and maximized seeing the most locations in our time frame. The hotels were beautiful (especially the one in Queenstown, WOW!) and the rooms were perfect for our needs (kitchens and laundry). It was so great having everything pre-booked and guided, as it allowed us to relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about logistics. It was a trip of a lifetime.

I would highly recommend this Zicasso travel agency! When traveling so far away, it made such a difference to have everything coordinated by a professional. I have had many people ask how we managed to do so much with the time we had. Now, I don't think I can travel any other way.

Australia Tour Review: Uluru, Adelaide, Sydney, Local Cuisine, Light Show, 26-Night Trip

We could not have been more pleased with all of the arrangements. The attention to detail was perfect.

The original Zicasso travel specialist was wonderful and the one who took over from her was amazing. We selected her because of her knowledge of the best routing for air travel and suggestions as to cities that were safer than others.

While in Uluru, we discovered that one of our tours wasn't going to happen, so I called the travel specialist and, within 30 minutes, she had us booked on another tour, very similar to the one that got cancelled.

We especially appreciated the ground transportation. Each driver and their vehicle were great.

All of the tours we experienced were also well planned out. We did cancel one at the last minute in Sydney due to the rainy weather. The travel consultant informed us that we might not get a refund because it was such short notice.

The hotel selections were excellent. We had to depart each one prior to the opening of the breakfast buffet (which was included). In each case, the hotel arranged a "to-go" breakfast box and had it delivered to our room before we left. Excellent service.

New Zealand, Australia Vacation Review: Queenstown, Auckland, Milford Sound, Christchurch, 2 Weeks

Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.

For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.

The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound.  I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!
