Port Douglas – Easing Into the Experience and a Welcome Dinner Overlooking the Pacific

It is quiet and blissful in Port Douglas, which is Australia’s favorite town for retirees. Tropical waters stretch out from the golden beach, a thick and beautiful rainforest backdrops the town, and palms sway gently, reflecting the laid-back pace of life here. Today, you will land in Cairns, which is the gateway to Queensland and Australia’s tropical Northeastern coast. Cairns itself has become a little rowdy, plus there is not actually a beach in the town. You will take a one-hour transfer up the coast to Port Douglas, which is a more favorable destination for seniors and a lovely place to ease into an Australian vacation. The afternoon will be at your leisure, and there are some excellent cafes and terraces along the beach for you to try. Tonight’s first dinner will be at a superb little restaurant with views that overlook the rainforest and water.

Detailed Description

Senior travelers who are coming to Australia are commonly surprised by how easy it is to see and do a lot without having to rush. Here, you can take your time each morning, travel at a tranquil pace, and not miss out on the iconic elements of an Australian travel experience. Yes, the country may be large and vast, but transport connections are superb, and many activities are carefully-tailored to seniors. So, with this ten-day tour, you can connect rainforests, reefs, deserts, and Aboriginal culture with the modern city. The route has been handcrafted to provide senior travelers with a relaxed vacation and authentic immersion in the places that make Australia so unique and special.

After flying into Cairns, you will spend your first three nights in Port Douglas, which is a small and tropical town that has become the country’s favorite place for retirees. Rainforests provide the backdrop, and a long, golden beach is ideal for getting over the jet lag. On day two, you will travel to the rainforest and meet the coastal Aboriginals to learn about their culture and traditions as well as their use of art as a medium for history. On day three, you travel to the Great Barrier Reef, where you can experience all the underwater wonder without getting wet. A special semi-submersible craft will take you about three separate reefs, which means that you can see a lot more than if you were snorkeling.

On day four, you will fly to Alice Springs for a three-day, desert journey. A red landscape unfolds in all directions, and it holds many secrets for you to uncover. You will spend the afternoon and evening in the outpost town before dining beneath the stars and feeling the outback’s serene beauty. Day five of your vacation will take you to Kings Canyon and a gorgeous lodge that will seem cut off from the world. By then, you will really start to know the desert’s nuance along with the incredible constellations that unfurl each night. Day six offers a personal experience with Uluru and then the domes of Kata Tjuta, culminating your experience with Australia’s red desert.

The best way to tour Sydney is by the Parramatta River. After landing in the city, you will venture on a sunset dinner cruise, passing under Sydney Harbour Bridge and alongside the famous opera sails. Fly by helicopter to the Hunter Valley for a day of wine tasting on day eight. It is Australia’s oldest and most traditional wine region and an excellent place to relax in bucolic surroundings and experience another side of the country’s history. Traditional Sydney sights will be the focus of your final day in Australia, including the Victorian markets. You will not need to walk very far, and there will be a sense of really going behind the scenes, especially at the Sydney Opera House. Here, you will not tour the building but delight in a performance. Just like the rest of this vacation for seniors, the focus will be on experiencing rather than sightseeing. Australia Tour Review: Uluru, Adelaide, Sydney, Local Cuisine, Light Show, 26-Night Trip

We could not have been more pleased with all of the arrangements. The attention to detail was perfect.

The original Zicasso travel specialist was wonderful and the one who took over from her was amazing. We selected her because of her knowledge of the best routing for air travel and suggestions as to cities that were safer than others.

While in Uluru, we discovered that one of our tours wasn't going to happen, so I called the travel specialist and, within 30 minutes, she had us booked on another tour, very similar to the one that got cancelled.

We especially appreciated the ground transportation. Each driver and their vehicle were great.

All of the tours we experienced were also well planned out. We did cancel one at the last minute in Sydney due to the rainy weather. The travel consultant informed us that we might not get a refund because it was such short notice.

The hotel selections were excellent. We had to depart each one prior to the opening of the breakfast buffet (which was included). In each case, the hotel arranged a "to-go" breakfast box and had it delivered to our room before we left. Excellent service.

Australia, New Zealand Trip Review: Tasmania, Rotorua, Uluru, Queenstown, Luging, Camel Ride, Wildlife, Hobbiton, Islands, Glowworm Cave, 2 Weeks

We absolutely loved so much of our trip! My kids’ (ages 11 and eight) favorite activities were luging in Rotorua, NZ, and the sunset camel ride in Uluru, AU, while my husband and I were enchanted by Hobbiton and enjoyed exploring a glowworm cave with the owner's father! We all loved Tasmania.

There were a few hiccups. However, we were very happy with all the support the Zicasso travel company's team provided in real time to help us get back on track.

The overall trip was fantastic. My husband and I appreciated having the team support our adventures, both the highs and the lows. The team members were detailed-oriented. This trip exceeded our expectations and we’re incredibly grateful for their expertise in curating such memorable experiences.

New Zealand, Australia Trip Review: Sydney, Great Barrier Reef, Dart River, Phillip Island, Dinner Cruise, Rainforest, Wildlife, Snorkeling, Helicopter Ride, Boat Tour, 23 Nights

Thanks to the amazing, perfectly planned Australia and New Zealand vacation itinerary provided by Zicasso's travel agency, and specifically the travel agent and her wonderful colleagues, this was the perfect vacation. We were well taken care of and flights were planned within the countries, with someone always greeting us at the next stop to move us through to our next adventure.

We were always busy and saw the most wonderful things... a sunset dinner cruise on Sydney harbor, the march of the penguins at Phillip Island (she arranged for us to have a front-row seat!), snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and touring the rainforest with an Aboriginal guide was very interesting! She arranged for many tours and activities, like a jet boat ride up the Dart River, a helicopter ride onto a glacier, and a TranzAlpine train ride in New Zealand. We also had a first-time-ever encounter with a pod of orca while on a boat tour in New Zealand. The whole trip was an unforgettable experience!

We wished we had taken the travel agent's advice and stayed longer. There was so much to see. We packed a lot into our four short weeks thanks to them. We highly recommend using them to plan your Australia and New Zealand itinerary.
