Detailed Description

During your 13-days in Japan, expect a handcrafted tour that ensures that your first trip to Japan is one of many to this amazing country. Though Tokyo is the most visited city in Japan, your time there includes visits to some of the metropolis’ lesser known areas. Eat where the locals do as you see the city’s best sites while avoiding the tourist crowds.

After a full day in Tokyo, you’re off to Kakunodate, one of the most northern cities in Honshu. Here, walk in the footsteps of the samurai as you discover the city’s old town. Here the locals have preserved Edo Period crafts and cuisine for your enjoyment, making your time in Kakunodate as historically accurate, and enjoyable, as possible.

Matsushima was spared the destruction that devastated Japan’s northern coasts in March 2011. While there, enjoy a sea cruise exploring the bay’s many islands. Inland, you find a stunning temple and moss-covered shrines invoking a harmony with nature. Your inn in Matsushima includes views of the sea, certain to inspire reflection.

Hoshi Onsen is the ultimate spot for relaxation. Your ryokan’s (Japanese inn) onsen (hot springs) baths are second to none. Also, the surrounding area is home to a variety of nature trails and winter skiing. Or, if you want a little down time, your hotel room’s balcony features views of rivers and forests. It is a perfect place to read a book or simply listen to the sounds of nature.

Obuse was once a major post town on the Nakasendo trail between Tokyo and Kyoto. For 250 years, travelers passed through on foot, stopping in Obuse for lodging and food. For a day, you follow in these travelers’ footsteps as you tour Obuse’s old town, getting a first-hand look at what a Japanese town was like hundreds of years ago. In the evening, stay at a boutique hotel that was once a sake distillery.

Over 300 years ago, Matsumoto was home to one of the most power daimyo clans that helped oversee Japan during the Edo Period. Thus, the Matsumoto Castle was built as an imposing fortress. Restored over the last 100 years, today the castle teaches visitors about the lives of samurai, commoners, and merchants who lived in this city so long ago.

In many ways, the city of Tsumago is similar to Colonial Williamsburg in the United States. Though the home’s inhabitants have all the comforts of modern life, city regulations make sure that Tsumago’s ascetic does not vary from its Edo Period roots. As you explore this quaint town, see (and eat) like the Japanese of the 19th-century.

Mt. Fuji is one of the most famous mountains on Earth. Traveling to the mountain by train, take in the sights while staying at a ryokan at Mt. Fuji’s base. Everything from lake cruises to ropeway rides let you take in incomparable views of stunning nature.

Your last full day in Japan is completely up to you. Though your hotel this evening is in Tokyo, take more time at Mr. Fuji, or take an early morning train back to the capital for one last day of exploration and fun.

Perfect for couples or small groups, this tour is best taken in late winter or early spring. No matter which season you travel to Japan, be prepared for varying weather, as your tour takes you through the country’s different geographical regions and climates.

Japan Travel Review: Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Local Cuisine, Boat Ride, Wildlife, Nature, 10-Night Trip

We had a lovely post-Tokyo Marathon trip through Japan. We hit so many highlights and we got to see so much of each area that we visited through jam-packed and enjoyable days. Our tour guide was very helpful, friendly, and flexible to help us see as much as we could. We wish we could have spent another week there!

Japan Tour Review: Ryokans, Guides, Cuisine, Gardens, 3 Weeks

The itinerary we developed with the Zicasso' travel specialist's guidance and recommendations was great. The accommodations were excellent, except the ryokan's... they were outstanding!!! The guides and drivers were knowledgeable, helpful, informative, and fun to be with. The culture and people in Japan are amazing, as is the natural beauty and the food. The trip went smoothly. The trains were on time, comfortable and a great way to travel.

Overall, this was one of the best trips we've taken and we've traveled to more than 60 countries.

Japan Vacation Review: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Kanazawa, Ryokan, Lake Kawaguchiko, 2-Week Tour

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.

The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.

She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.

Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

Japan Travel Review: Kyoto, Tokyo, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Hakone/Gora, Tea Ceremony, Kimono Fitting, Biking, 12-Day Tour

We had a good trip overall and enjoyed all of the hotels our travel agent selected. Some of the guides, however, were not excellent. We were also surprised when the bullet train tickets delivered to our hotel were for the wrong destination. I'm so glad I checked this before we left Tokyo; the local agent was able to replace the tickets promptly, albeit not with first-class tickets. I had the unique experience of working with two Zicasso Japan specialists--this one for 12 days family time on Honshu and another for rural/nature exploring on Hokkaido. I therefore have a basis for comparison, and I can say that this agency was less careful or attentive to many details. Another example is that we did not receive a finalized itinerary with guide details before we left for Japan. That came only after I let the agency know about the train ticket problem. Also, our itinerary did not have any information in the Japanese language. This led to repeated problems with taxi drivers who didn't know where the (newish) hotel in Kyoto was. We needed that information in Japanese to facilitate transfers to and from the train station, etc. Seems like a significant oversight.

Japan Tour Review: Nature, Wildlife, Rurality, Agriculture, 5 Nights

This was a five-night trip focused on nature, wildlife, rural, and agricultural places in northeastern Hokkaido. I enjoyed it very much. Zicasso's trip planner found a very good (female) guide to accompany me (traveling solo for this part of my time in Japan) through the region and I always felt safe. My trip planner was attentive to details. She was in touch with my local guide periodically.

This part of Japan is exquisitely beautiful and I hope to return to take in still more wildlife and agricultural/rural areas. I loved all of the places we visited. My favorites were Bihoro Pass and Lake Kussharo, the village of Tsurui (near Kushiro) and the wildlife observation area at Onnenai, Lake Mashū, Shiretoko, the drive from Shiretoko to Memanbetsu Airport, and the drive from Lake Akan to Shiretoko.

We had a fabulous trip. We enjoyed every second of it. We were very pleased with the Zicasso tour company. They really listened to our preferences. They arranged wonderful guides for us and helped us craft an itinerary that suited our interests. All the hotels were excellent, as were the restaurants they recommended.
