Detailed Description
Mountains will shimmer with white through panoramic train windows, and glaciers will crunch beneath your feet on a heli hike, which is a hike that you will take on a glacier after a helicopter drops you off at the site. Lakes will stretch still and blue towards the horizon, and fjords will roll endlessly beneath ragged peaks. Welcome to Te Wai Pounamu, New Zealand’s South Island, where over a third of the landscape is a national park, and almost everywhere has a wilderness tinge. On this remarkable island, the journeys will always be experiential. You can watch how landscapes change on twisting alpine roads, take helicopters and boats to icebergs and glaciers, gaze across jaw-dropping lakes, and come to love Te Wai Pounamu’s scenic diversity. A vacation here is always an adventure, and this two-week tour will take you on a loop around the island, starting and ending in Christchurch.
Handcrafted to fit as much as possible into two weeks, this private tour has everything from penguins to Scottish heritage and remote sounds to the highest lakes. Christchurch is a relaxed city for overcoming the jet lag. Witnessing what the city is becoming is aan excellent introduction to New Zealand. You will travel westwards past Lake Tekapo for two nights in Mount Cook Village, where a boat tour will provide iceberg encounters, and a helicopter flight will offer unrivaled views over Mount Cook and the Fiordlands.
From dramatic to rustic, the scenery changes on route to Dunedin, which is a town of unique Scottish heritage. Explore at your leisure on day five and then take a boat trip to see penguins on day six. Next, you will board the Taieri Gorge train towards Queenstown, where two nights will bring serene views and your choice of adventure. The fjords are nearby, and you will soon be immersed in them on a luxury, overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound. Of all the New Zealand experiences, this regularly comes out as number one, as it is an exclusive journey into nature’s mystical realm.
Now you will travel back North, passing a series of lakes on route to Franz Josef, where the adventure will accelerate during your heli hike. You will then return to Christchurch via Greymouth and the TranzAlpine train, ending where you began. Although this is a lot of island to cover, you will have two nights in each destination, so there will also be a calmness and tranquility to complement all the exploration. Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.
For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.
The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound. I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!

The itinerary was awesome! We had a few snafus with hotel reservations, but they were quickly resolved. The tours were perfect and all private, with excellent guides. The pace made good use of the time we had and maximized seeing the most locations in our time frame. The hotels were beautiful (especially the one in Queenstown, WOW!) and the rooms were perfect for our needs (kitchens and laundry). It was so great having everything pre-booked and guided, as it allowed us to relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about logistics. It was a trip of a lifetime.
I would highly recommend this Zicasso travel agency! When traveling so far away, it made such a difference to have everything coordinated by a professional. I have had many people ask how we managed to do so much with the time we had. Now, I don't think I can travel any other way.

The travel company was excellent as was the agent, until we committed and paid. We were unhappy from then on and not what we have previously experienced from Zicasso agents. Very unresponsive, took weeks for some answers, lack for attention to detail eg forgot to book private transfer in Christchurch despite having months to do it. Still awaiting small refund for 2 months, money is not important service is.

Zicasso's travel consultant was wonderful to work with. She listened very closely to our trip desires and met every one of them. She was very responsive before and during the vacation. She was accommodating with changes and worked with us on every step to make it a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I would highly recommend her and this tour company for future trip arrangements.
Australia and New Zealand were great. I would definitely spend more time in the rural areas vs the cities. However, Queenstown was awesome and we tend to enjoy the outdoors more than city life.
Thank you for a terrific trip!

The travel consultant at Zicasso's travel agency planned a memorable adventure. Our primary focus was the amazing golf courses in New Zealand. We were able not only to enjoy all the courses on our bucket list, but also the history, culture, and adventure New Zealand offers.
