Christchurch – A Short History Since the Earthquake
Christchurch’s architectural heritage came down in 2011. An earthquake devastated the city, and on a short walking tour, you can still find large piles of rubble and rutted out, ruined buildings; however, this is not a sad city story. Amid the destruction there are symbols of beauty and innovation, such as the Cardboard Cathedral and an abundance of murals that shine upon walls in various states of reconstruction. A walking tour will be a great insight into what happened, and especially what has happened since the devastating earthquake. It will prove an excellent introduction into the positive attitude and atmosphere that marks the Southern Island.

Detailed Description
Mountain peaks will stand like sentinels across the South Island, and dramatic cliffs will create fjords in the island’s wild West. Waterfalls will tumble, and glacial rivers will cut across the vast wilderness. Such dazzling surroundings means nature always takes over on the South Island, which makes the story of its settlers even more engaging. From the early Maori to an Antarctic explorer, this island has forged some of the most innovative communities on the planet. Their achievements can be seen in traditional greenstone art, remote railway lines, and farmsteads.
This handcrafted tour uses the island’s natural history as a backdrop to explore heritage and culture. You will start with the present, landing in Christchurch to see how the city is rebuilding itself after the 2011 earthquake. Then, gain an official welcome with a Maori Pōwhiri ceremony and Hāngi dinner. The food will be slow roasted in an underground pit. You will then spend day three with a Maori family in Kaikoura, which will be an intimate insight into 800 years of tradition and heritage. New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary learned many of his mountaineering and wilderness skills around Mount Cook. There is now a Hillary alpine center beneath New Zealand’s highest mountain, and you will have a chance to learn about the island’s explorer heritage before you make a personal adventure to the surrounding national park.
Much of the island’s European settler history is in the South. Crafted from local white-stone, the Victorian architecture of Oamaru is unique to the world. Dunedin has a Scottish flavor and is not the only New Zealand castle on the Otago Peninsula nearby. Somehow, pioneers carved a railway line through Taieri Gorge, and you will travel on the single track, before ending day eight with a Maori Haka, a ceremonial war dance, on a mountain above Queenstown. Gold mining villages and traditional farmsteads will be part of a heritage tour on day nine, with Queenstown’s natural setting keeping one foot firmly in a wilderness realm.
Nearing the end of your journey, you will take a beautiful overland journey through UNESCO World Heritage landscapes on day ten, where you will admire how ancient glaciers have carved the magnificent landscape. Your trip will come to an end in Franz Josef, where you will have the opportunity to see the incredibly rare rowi kiwi bird. To the Maori, the South Island is referred to as Te Wai Pounamu, which translates to “The Waters of Greenstone.” The precious jade is sacred to the natives, and you will help cut and carve a keepsake piece with a meaning, while a Maori artist explains different techniques and meanings for different shapes. Finally, you will end the 13-day trip with another historical train journey, from Greymouth back to Christchurch on the TranzAlpine train. Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.
For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.
The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound. I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!

The itinerary was awesome! We had a few snafus with hotel reservations, but they were quickly resolved. The tours were perfect and all private, with excellent guides. The pace made good use of the time we had and maximized seeing the most locations in our time frame. The hotels were beautiful (especially the one in Queenstown, WOW!) and the rooms were perfect for our needs (kitchens and laundry). It was so great having everything pre-booked and guided, as it allowed us to relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about logistics. It was a trip of a lifetime.
I would highly recommend this Zicasso travel agency! When traveling so far away, it made such a difference to have everything coordinated by a professional. I have had many people ask how we managed to do so much with the time we had. Now, I don't think I can travel any other way.

The travel company was excellent as was the agent, until we committed and paid. We were unhappy from then on and not what we have previously experienced from Zicasso agents. Very unresponsive, took weeks for some answers, lack for attention to detail eg forgot to book private transfer in Christchurch despite having months to do it. Still awaiting small refund for 2 months, money is not important service is.

Zicasso’s tour planner created an amazing trip for us. He was quick to respond with initial planning and tailored the trip to our personal interests, thus creating a true customized experience. His expertise, advice, and recommendations were invaluable.
Our itinerary allowed us to see and do so much during our trip, including museums, galleries, Māori cultural experiences, a lake-side day spa, geothermal park, Hobbiton, Mount Cook, a harbor tour, Milford Sound, a scenic railway trip through the Southern Alps, hiking, and dining, etc.
We enjoyed each of the selected accommodations.
The New Zealand touring app was an amazing resource and contained perfect details for each excursion and accommodation check-ins. Questions that arose during the trip were always answered in a timely manner over the app. Essentially, the stress of planning a two-week, multicity road trip was eliminated and all the hours I would have spent planning this itinerary myself were avoided. I would highly recommend the company.

Zicasso's travel consultant was wonderful to work with. She listened very closely to our trip desires and met every one of them. She was very responsive before and during the vacation. She was accommodating with changes and worked with us on every step to make it a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I would highly recommend her and this tour company for future trip arrangements.
Australia and New Zealand were great. I would definitely spend more time in the rural areas vs the cities. However, Queenstown was awesome and we tend to enjoy the outdoors more than city life.
Thank you for a terrific trip!

The travel consultant at Zicasso's travel agency planned a memorable adventure. Our primary focus was the amazing golf courses in New Zealand. We were able not only to enjoy all the courses on our bucket list, but also the history, culture, and adventure New Zealand offers.
