You can recline on the deck of a chartered yacht, feel a refreshing wind as it passes your ears, and gaze upon deserted islands. When the captain drops anchor, you can jump into beautiful Pacific waters or kayak to an isolated and uninhabited beach. To round off your introductory day, you will indulge in a picnic that will be complete with a bottle of sparkling champagne. So, rest, kick-back, and forget about planning anything. From the moment that you land in the Bay of Islands, there is not much that you need. An airport transfer will bring you to the harbor-side lodge, and your day can be as relaxed as you require.

Detailed Description
New Zealand is a country that is dominated by wilderness. So much of the land remains not only off the beaten track, but virtually unknown and explored. Here, you do not need to travel far to escape the crowds. All you must do is stay clear of the standard best of route. With this handcrafted vacation, you go much further than that. You will explore private Maori-owned lands that are closed to the public, and by helicopters and boats, you will visit active volcanoes and deserted islands. This will not just be a vacation to destinations that do not see as many visitors but will be an excursion into landscapes that few have had the privilege to see.
Going off the beaten track is a mix of where you go and how you get there. There will be rally car driving in the remote north, four different helicopter tours, kayaking, and rafting in untouched wildernesses along with plenty of downtime to spend on the coast. From the Bay of Island to Lake Taupo and Hawkes Bay, you can enjoy the complete array of North Island landscapes. Then, with a remote base on both Westhaven Inlet and Lake Wanaka, you can truly discover Te Wahipounamu, which is the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses half of the South Island. Your accommodation has been handpicked to maximize your sense of seclusion, notably boutique lodges that do not find their way into standard tourist brochures.
Going off the beaten track in New Zealand typically involves adventure. You will be visiting places that are inaccessible by road in addition to destinations where the reason for being there is to feel the outdoors. Still, the level of adventure can always be adjusted on a private tour. For example, you can choose kayaking and quad biking in the Bay of Islands, or you may prefer to stick to lazy afternoons on a yacht charter. With each helicopter tour, there will be an option to hike in the very remote wilderness, but it can be just as exciting to climb out and simply enjoy the silence and unobstructed views.
You will kick-start your vacation in the Bay of Islands where a yacht charter can access uninhabited islands and beaches. This is New Zealand’s tropical Pacific, and it is an ideal place to overcome the jet lag and feel the allure of nature. On day two, you will helicopter to Cape Reinga, where the adventure can include quad biking on Ninety Mile Beach and a guided, rally car tour that is far from the road. Taupo is a pretty touristic destination, but you are not staying in the town on days four or five. Instead, by using an isolated lakeside base, these two days will be about unique means of exploration.
You will helicopter and hike upon active volcanoes on day five after rafting and abseiling in backcountry Maori lands the day before. These two days of great outdoors will be followed by two days in the vineyards. Hawkes Bay is a remote getaway, and you will not have much to do here other than wine tasting, cliff-side picnics, and a beautiful spa. It will be a chance to catch your breath and wonder why so few people visit Hawkes Bay. After flying to Nelson, you will spend days eight to ten on Westhaven Inlet, which will be a private little base for discovering Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks.
Here, you can kayak and cruise along the coastline with reef sharks and rays that can be easily spotted in turquoise coves. There will be a safari wilderness tour, a four-wheel drive expedition into the backcountry, and the hiking trails of a huge national park. Rather than staying in touristic Queenstown, you will culminate your tour on Lake Wanaka, which is more tranquil. You can explore the vineyards on day 12 before horseback riding and mountain biking in Mt. Aspiring National Park, which is a customizable journey that can really evoke wild and forgotten New Zealand. Fjordland is a dramatic final destination, and while it is famous, you will be going off the beaten track on a helicopter tour that will have you wishing that your back home involved adventure like this.

The itinerary was awesome! We had a few snafus with hotel reservations, but they were quickly resolved. The tours were perfect and all private, with excellent guides. The pace made good use of the time we had and maximized seeing the most locations in our time frame. The hotels were beautiful (especially the one in Queenstown, WOW!) and the rooms were perfect for our needs (kitchens and laundry). It was so great having everything pre-booked and guided, as it allowed us to relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about logistics. It was a trip of a lifetime.
I would highly recommend this Zicasso travel agency! When traveling so far away, it made such a difference to have everything coordinated by a professional. I have had many people ask how we managed to do so much with the time we had. Now, I don't think I can travel any other way.

Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.
For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.
The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound. I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!

This was a fabulous trip! All of our tours, guides, and transfers were on time and very high quality. We especially enjoyed the "adventure" tours in New Zealand. Zicasso's travel agent was easy to work with, listened to our questions and concerns, and always had a good and/or practical suggestion! We would highly recommend him!

The travel consultant at Zicasso's travel agency planned a memorable adventure. Our primary focus was the amazing golf courses in New Zealand. We were able not only to enjoy all the courses on our bucket list, but also the history, culture, and adventure New Zealand offers.

Thanks to the amazing, perfectly planned Australia and New Zealand vacation itinerary provided by Zicasso's travel agency, and specifically the travel agent and her wonderful colleagues, this was the perfect vacation. We were well taken care of and flights were planned within the countries, with someone always greeting us at the next stop to move us through to our next adventure.
We were always busy and saw the most wonderful things... a sunset dinner cruise on Sydney harbor, the march of the penguins at Phillip Island (she arranged for us to have a front-row seat!), snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and touring the rainforest with an Aboriginal guide was very interesting! She arranged for many tours and activities, like a jet boat ride up the Dart River, a helicopter ride onto a glacier, and a TranzAlpine train ride in New Zealand. We also had a first-time-ever encounter with a pod of orca while on a boat tour in New Zealand. The whole trip was an unforgettable experience!
We wished we had taken the travel agent's advice and stayed longer. There was so much to see. We packed a lot into our four short weeks thanks to them. We highly recommend using them to plan your Australia and New Zealand itinerary.

Zicasso's travel specialist worked with us every step of the way to create an amazing itinerary filled with adventure in New Zealand and luxurious relaxation in Fiji. She helped us adjust the itinerary until it was just right. Unfortunately, there were a couple of excursions that were impacted by the weather and other logistics, which impacted our experience, but it was not her fault and she was willing to try to find other options.
