Lima - Some of the World's Finest Seafood

Before the heritage comes the seafood. Lima has a revered culinary scene. Here, they will fuse flavors from across the Pacific and craft dishes the rest of the world desires to copy. Even if you are not a seafood person, Lima will be the place to try as the tastes are vastly different to what you may have had before. Ceviche is the most famous dish, but it is only served at lunchtime after the fresh catch is brought in each morning. So, after a midday arrival and plenty of time to relax at the hotel, you will have reservations at a restaurant from one of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants list, where the tasting menu will provide a journey through unique Peruvian flavors.

Detailed Description

Peru is famous for Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas and one of the new seven wonders of the world. This mountainous nation is a jigsaw puzzle of histories and mysteries, where so many of the stories went unrecorded. Communities still live on floating islands, seemingly cut off from the rest of civilization. Markets still celebrate pre-Incan beliefs while cities blend Spanish indulgence with Incan styles. The results are breathtaking as this private tour joins the dots from 2000 years of changing heritage.

Ten days is more than adequate for you to explore Peru in depth, although it does not allow time to include remote cultures of the Amazon. Instead, most of your time is spent in the mountains, where the landscapes have continually brought quarrel and change. It is wild up here, and there were not any written records before the Spanish arrived. Yet, the history you seek is not necessarily pieces from a museum or storybook. For example, sublime Collaguas terraces still stand, forming the architecture of more recent mountain villages. Also in Cusco, you will discover how Incan stone became the foundation for a Spanish city. Some stories are still not known, so while you have the best of Peru’s historical guides, there are times you must use your imagination to decipher as to what really took place.

Kick start the tour in Lima, where the heritage blurs more than a millennium of change. Although the capital does not host the most exciting aspect of your trip, there are beautiful landmarks here as well as some of the world’s finest seafood cuisine. On day two, you tour the old city and fly above the Nazca Lines, before a flight on day three takes you to Arequipa. This mountain city is Spanish and mostly unchanged, with cobbled lanes, a grand plaza, and sublime old churches. Colca Canyon takes you into nature on day four, and traditional villages and pre-Incan culture will punctuate the journey. This continues on day five as you pass llamas and alpaca on route to Puno and the birthplace of Incan mythology.

You will spend two nights on the banks of Lake Titicaca. Day six is all about the water, visiting the floating islands of Uros and Taquile, where tribal life is remarkably unchanged. Of all Peru’s historical destinations, it is the area around Cusco that is most unmissable. Machu Picchu is the most famous Incan leftover, and it is saved for last. You will take the train there on day nine and spend the afternoon in the citadel. By staying at the only hotel by the ruins, you will spend more time in Machu Picchu, enjoying it after the crowds have departed. In between, days seven and eight are stuffed with historical sights, from the old Incan capital itself to the Sacred Valley. There are so many stories and histories here, which is something that is symbolic of a private vacation to Peru. Peru Tour Review: Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Sacsayhuaman, Salt Mines, Sacred Valley, 8 Nights

We had an absolutely amazing trip. The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are by far some of the most memorable experiences we've ever had. Our guide and driver were incredibly kind and accommodating, and our guide especially was very knowledgeable, with so much respect for the surrounding nature and culture.

When we initially discussed our plans with Zicasso’s travel agent, all we knew we wanted to do was the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and we allowed her to provide recommendations for how to fill some additional time in Cusco while we acclimated. She did not steer us wrong! Touring Cusco itself, seeing Sacsayhuaman, several spots in the Sacred Valley, and the Maras Salt Mines were all unforgettable experiences. We also loved the hotel she had us at in Cusco. It was a great spot to be able to explore the city on our own time.

After seeing all of the coordination, especially for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, we're so relieved we chose to go through Zicasso for this trip and were connected with our travel agency. Not a single thing went wrong. Our guide was on top of every detail and it was great knowing our agent was just a text or phone call away.

Peru Trip Review: Lima, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Hiking, 8-Night Tour

We had a great trip to Peru! Zicasso’s tour operator was super-helpful in working through the final itinerary and activities with us and answered a lot of questions we had on everything, from what cities to visit, hotels, and even trains. Our travel agent was great in handling the finalization of the itinerary and keeping us informed as our trip came closer. The final itinerary, provided a few weeks before our trip, detailed the times for meeting our guides and our pick-ups and drop-offs, which was very helpful.

Our guides were amazing!  We had a great time with them in Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco. The drivers and vehicles provided through our travel company were great, with safe drivers in clean and comfortable vehicles.

Our trip was planned perfectly to help us adjust to the climate. Starting in Lima and ending in Cusco worked great for us and allowed us to get used to the higher elevations. In the end, our itinerary was nine days/eight nights and we didn't feel rushed at all during our trip.

Ecuador, Peru Travel Review: Machu Picchu, Galapagos Cruise, 2-Week Tour

The trip was well organized on a short notice and I truly appreciated it. All staff was courteous, responsive, and punctual. Zicasso's travel agent was instrumental in putting the details together and was always available to answer questions or address concerns. The entire trip also involved many connections and transfers, and almost all were handled well. All of the drivers drove professionally and in a safe manner. A few areas where improvement would be helpful are those of communications within the various members of the team, attentiveness of the guides to clients for the entirety of the visit, and of receiving relevant information earlier. For example, on at least three occasions, conflicting information from different sources required unnecessary followup clarification. Additionally, the guide in Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu never went beyond providing the most basic information about the sites. It felt to us that it was just a job for him, not his passion. He also spent an inordinate time on his phone. Lastly, it would be helpful to receive the General Travel Advice documents at least a month before the trip, and not 10 days before as was the case.

Peru Birthday Trip Review: Valle Sagrado, Cusco, Machu Picchu, 8 Nights

Our Zicasso travel agent and her team meticulously crafted an exceptional itinerary and excursion to commemorate my birthday. They delivered a thoughtful gift to our hotel room and arranged for souvenirs to be available in Cusco. The drivers and tour guides were all exceptional, providing us with a memorable experience.

We had the pleasure of spending a significant amount of time with our tour guide in Valle Sagrado and Cusco. His recommendations for restaurants and insights into local activities were invaluable during our free time.
