Ultimate Two-Week Gastronomy Tour of Peru

Peruvian gastronomy

What to expect on this itinerary

Savor the authentic flavors of Peru while you venture to the scenic landscapes of the ancient Inca Empire. Street vendors in Cusco grin from ear to ear as they offer buttery thick choclo corn. In the foothills of the Andes mountains, indulge in heavenly, seasoned meat and potatoes that are cooked over hot burning stones. Amazonian staples like jaune will entice you with a flavorful mix of rice, chicken, and a delicate presentation inside banana leaves. Of course, there is no better way to learn about Peru's famed citrusy ceviche than to roll up your sleeves and get cooking alongside an expert chef. During these delicious two weeks, you will experience all of Peru’s unique, gastronomic highlights.

Lima – Touchdown and Sunset Stroll

Lima opens up along a pristine turquoise-blue coastline and welcomes visitors from around the world with arms stretched open. Locals carry on with the hustle and bustle of daily life in the third largest metropolitan area in the Americas, which is home to one-third of the country's population. Cars eagerly honk as they weave their way between other cars, bikes, and tour buses. Young children skip in the distance past carefree couples who are leisurely strolling through the Parque del Amor. Street vendors perform what looks like a circus plate twirling act as they tend to dozens of skewers of meat, rotating each perfectly on smoky hot coals until they are golden brown.

As you step foot on the tarmac, the fresh scent of sea salt and citrusy, lemon-lime aromas will waft in your direction. Your private transport will escort you to your five-star, luxury accommodation in the prestigious neighborhood of San Blas.

By mid-afternoon, the hot Peruvian sun will begin to wane in the sky, which is perhaps the best time of the day to experience the city in its full beauty. Sky gliders sway back and forth in the distance against the backdrop of a warm, yellow-orange horizon, and talented musicians serenade passersby and families that are set out on picnic blankets in the grassy, public parks. At sunset, you can choose from a plethora of decadent dining options, each with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean's iridescent, rolling waves.

Detailed Description

Peru's idyllic terrain, diverse plant and animal life, and rich, cultural heritage make for a truly captivating and immersive experience. Yet, among the country's most prized gems include its decadent cuisines of nearly every flavor. Journey to the tops of mountains, the depths of the jungles, the sandy shores of the breathtaking coastlines. Witness serene valleys at their core while you sink your teeth into tantalizing foods that are symbolic of each region.

You will start in the nation's capital of Lima, where you will tour the city and take part in an authentic ceviche cooking class alongside a renowned chef. Later, amble down the vibrant alleyways of post-colonial Arequipa where you will peruse the technicolor produce of San Camilo market. At the famed Lake Titicaca, you can sample fresh lake trout after spending the day atop the floating Uros islands.

Next, travel inland as you make the steep climb to Cusco, which is situated at 11,000 feet above sea level. There is no better way to adjust to the change in altitude than by sipping on a traditional cup of mate de coca tea as the Andean people have done for centuries. Take a tour of the celebrated remnants of the Inca Empire as you hop from one bar and restaurant to the next while sampling Novo-Andean cuisine. After two unforgettable days of exploring Machu Picchu, you will culminate your journey in the mystical and delightful Amazon Jungle where you will zipline from treetops and work up an appetite for the coveted delicacy of jaune.

Peru Tour Review: Lima, Machu Picchu, 8 Nights

I wish I could give more than five stars. My husband and I took our two children, ages 16 and 11, on this amazing trip. Zicasso's travel experts made great suggestions to help make the trip one for everybody to remember. They and their vendors were amazingly supportive, beyond what we expected during the trip in-country as well.
